Sommai Friolet, Production Medical
You've been working at Gsell for 20 years. What has changed in production over the years?
A lot has changed in the last few years. Gsell has grown considerably - the team has increased from around 10 to over 100 employees. We now have two additional production halls and a lot of more up-to-date machinery. A big step has been the adoption of quality management, which has significantly increased the requirements for precision and documentation, especially for orders from the medical field. It's true that the work today is more paper-based than before, but that doesn't worry me, because it helps us to meet the high standards. I see the transformation as a positive development. Despite this growth, it's nice to see that the family atmosphere that characterises Gsell is still tangible. I really appreciate that. I've known Simon since he was a child. He came to work here during the school holidays to earn some pocket money. Even then you could see that he was dedicated and passionate about his work. And now he is managing the company.
Do you remember your first day at work?
Yes, I remember my first day at work very well. I started in the final cleaning department. After a short time I was asked if I could imagine working on the machines. It was a great opportunity for me and I immediately knew: «I'm staying here!» I was able to get involved and learn a lot. I look back with joy and pride on an unbelievably wonderful time in this family-run business and am glad that I found my way here 20 years ago. The fact that I still enjoy going to work every morning after so many years says it all.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I actually look forward to every day. It's especially nice when all the machines are running at full capacity and everything is working smoothly - it just gives me a good feeling. I also look back on the great cooperation with my first supervisor, Walti Schön. I learned a lot from him and benefited from his experience, for that I am very grateful.
What is your personal highlight of the last 20 years?
There isn't really a specific highlight for me - I couldn't select one because every day has brought joy in its own way. When I think of the various team excursions, I have many wonderful memories: I especially remember the day at the Zurich Zoo, but also the helicopter flights or the two-day trip to Ticino. This year's 40th anniversary team event to Mount Pilatus was particularly enjoyable - these are all moments that bring the team together.
You said that you will retire soon. What are your wishes for the future?
Yes, it's incredible how fast time goes by. For the first time, I'm looking forward to some time off - a trip to Thailand with my husband - a long time wish that we want to fulfill. After that I would like to continue working at Gsell and support the team.
